How to measure the Moon- In a classroom!!

In class we were asked to figure out the size of the moon using an index card, a ruler and scissors. We were given a piece of paper with a moon printed on it. We placed it on a wall and then measured out 3 meter sticks away and marked out where we needed to stand. We cut out a 1 cm square at the top of the index card. In the middle of an index card, cut out a whole big enough to slide the ruler through.

Next step step, you are ready to start taking measurements. From here you will hold up the ruler with the index card attached to it, up by your eye and look at the moon. Place the moon in between the 1 cm hole and look and see where the index card lays on the ruler. After you record your results 3 times, time to find your average!

The formula looks like this :

This experiment was very enjoyable and easy! I could see myself using this experiment someday to help the kids get an understanding that they can figure amazing things out, including the size of the moon!
