Beyond Our Solar System
Space is a fascinating subject to talk about. The unknown about space leaves you wondering what is out there and if there are other creatures and habitable planets. We have learned how to calculate how far away the sun is from Earth, as well as the size of the moon. We have learned other ways to show how the different moon phases come to be due to the sun. Now we are taking a step deeper and learning about ancient astrology, how it's come to be what we know today.
To break it down quite simply, here's the list of the most significant astronomers and scientist and their contribution.
Nicolaus Copernicus- This guy developed his own celestial model of a heliocentric planetary system, meaning the sun is in the middle and the planets revolve around the sun.
Tycho Brahe- This guy was insanely rich!! Pretty sure he had 1% of the richest from Denmark. He also was known for losing part of his nose during a duel and having a silver nose. With that much money, he built a huge telescope. It was known that he was looking for a perfect universe. He wanted to prove that the universe was geocentric, meaning everything revolved around Earth. He was able to determine the length of the planets using stellar parallax.
Johannes Kepler- He was Tycho's student, he also was a supporter that the "universe is perfect". He wanted to us the idea that 5 regular solids would fit into a planet and it would then be considered a perfect circle. His finding was incorrect and we discovered that the planets are not perfectly round. He also came up with 3 laws.
1st law: orbits in an elliptical orbit around the sun
2nd law: closer you are, speeds up. farther you are, slows down.
3rd law: the square of the planets orbital time is proportional to its average distance from the sun.
Galileo Galilei- He came up with numerous new things like the ptolemaic system vs. copernican system. He invented the thermometer and a better version of the telescope. He popularized the scientific method that is known and practiced worldwide today. He proved that if you drop 2 different things at the same time, they will fall at the same rate. Also he discovered the moon surface as well as the moons orbiting Jupiter.
Isaac Newton- He is a pretty neat guy that has changed the science world tremendously. The calculus, prisms, the reflecting telescope, and pieces of 8 and milled coins is his doing. He has 3 laws of motion.
1st law: objects will remain at rest unless acted upon.
2nd law: when force is applied, it will accelerate.
3rd law: for every action, there is an equal or opposite reaction.
After learning about some of these amazing scientist, we learned how planets are formed- nebular fusion- we also learned that all the mass of the solar system is in the center, in our galaxy, the milky way, the sun is the center.
